Lil’ Kim saw a sudden surge in popularity this year, despite the fact that she hasn’t released a new album in more than five years.
The reason behind her sudden popularity? Social networking site Twitter, where she was one of the most talked about people in 2010. Kim is placed ahead of Nobel Peace Prize-nominated aid worker Zilda Arns and behind temperamental actor Mel Gibson.
The Queen Bee was ranked No. 6 in the “People” category on the 2010 Trends on Twitter list. Somewhat inexplicably, Kim saw herself as the only rapper on the list, and was only surpassed by Lady Gaga (No. 3) and teen-phenom Justin Bieber (No. 1) when it came to fellow musicians.
While Kim was one of the most popular people on Twitter this year, fellow rappers Drake, Lil Wayne, Kanye West and singer Rihanna all made the Top 10 Most Retweeted Tweets list.
Lil Wayne’s first text upon his release from prison after serving an eight-month sentence, which read “Aaaaaaahhhhhhmmmmm baaaaakkkkkkkkkk,” clocked in at No. 3 on the retweet list, while Drake came in at No. 2 for his thoughtful words: “We always ignore the ones who adore us, and adore the ones who ignore us.”
Stephen Colbert came in at No.1 on the retweet list, with his message — “In honor of oil-soaked birds, ‘tweets’ are now ‘gurgles'” — spreading like fire.
Congrats to Daniel “Boobie” Gibson of the Cleveland Cavaliers for popping the question to singer Keyshia Cole recently. The two had been dating since Young Jeezy dropped her for a while, and are looking to tie the knot in early 2011. Keyshia is making the rounds promoting her new album, while Gibson is focusing on being the best player on a bad team in Cleveland. Anyone wanna put a bet down on how long this marriage lasts?
Aretha Franklin is home from the hospital – and she’s already making plans for the holidays.
In a statement released Wednesday, the Queen of Soul said she’s been home for three days and her family and friends are taking great care of her. Franklin says she also has a private nurse who checks on her every day.
She also says she’s hoping to see a play about Sam Cooke in her hometown of Detroit soon and to see the production of “Dreamgirls” there before it closes this month.
Franklin had surgery for an ailment she has not disclosed. She says her doctors deemed the operation “highly successful.”
Franklin was forced to cancel concerts recently because of illness.
Keri sat down with Rap-Up TV to reveal some details about her soon-to-be-released ‘No Boys Allowed’ LP. During the discussion the singer/songwriter stated why Lil Kim’s verse on the song ‘Buy You’ was replaced by J.Cole and shared her thoughts on the Kim/Nicki Minaj beef. NEW YORK — Being a sex symbol has its dangers as Usher learned firsthand at his New York City concert.
The crooner brought an ecstatic female fan onstage Monday night for a serenade of his sensual song “Trading Places” at Madison Square Garden. He sat her on a couch while he caressed her.
Then, after they changed positions, the overexcited fan tried to move her leg to get closer to him. Her stiletto boot heel knocked him in the nose.
The fan tried to smooth things over by massaging Usher’s face, but there was no need: Usher wasn’t hurt and cracked a joke about it.
Trina Weighs in on Hip Hop Feud Between Nicki Minaj & Lil Kim from Halo Media Entertainment. Trina speaks on the Lil Kim vs Nicki Minaj beef not being good for Hip Hop.
Not content to merely tell you that LeBron James(notes) has moved into a massive mansion down in South Beach (overlooking Biscayne Bay, 12,000-square feet, a water view from every room), we now need to hip you to how, exactly, LeBron James’ life will look from day to day.
Chelsea Handler continues to fan the flames of rumors that she and 50 Cent are dating.
“I don’t know why anyone thinks I would ever date a rapper,” she tweeted with the photo below of her in the arms of a fully-clothed 50, in bed.
The pair was first snapped together in New Orleans in October, and Chelsea soon denied they were dating. Recently she told Katie Couric that 50 is “really cute,” but was coy about discussing any romance.
Chris Rock was A New Jersey mall inside the Neiman Marcus department store at the Garden State Plaza, according to reports, just as a very pregnant woman approaching an escalator a few feet away from him suddenly went into labor when her water broke.
Saving the day until medical help arrived, Rock relied on his wits (or his famous wit, in this case) to calm the mother-to-be and the concerned bystanders.
“He was making the crowd, and the woman in labor, laugh,” the witness said of the 45-year-old comic and father of two. “She recognized who he was immediately, and he stayed there until the paramedics took her away.”
Rock — who is raising daughters Lola, 8, and Zahra, 6, with wife Malaak Compton-Rock — was spotted earlier this month with Jerry Seinfeld at a Children’s Defense Fund benefit in New York City.
But don’t think he’s all doting daddy, all the time. Ever the risk-taker, Rock is slated to make his Broadway debut in ‘Motherf**ker with the Hat,’ co-starring Bobby Cannavale and Annabella Sciorra. The play will open in April 2011.
